The Departed is a story-driven mentalism piece set in Victorian England, inspired by spiritualist traditions and the idea of the Summerland — a gentle place believed to exist beside our own, where the departed wait in peace.

During the performance, a collection of aged cabinet photographs is introduced — each one representing a life remembered, a person missed. The cards are freely mixed by both performer and participant.

The participant is then asked to privately think of a single word from a list of twelve — something personal, silent, and unspoken — and to remember both the word and the number beside it. No information is given aloud.

A small selection of the cabinet cards is laid openly on the table, and a connection to the Summerland is established.

Without questions.

Without fishing.

Without guessing.

And nothing is written down.

The performer reveals the exact word the participant is merely thinking of — as though gently assisted by something beyond the room.

Only then does the story deepen.

A séance journal is opened, dated November 1890, describing the unexplained appearance of a single cabinet photograph — a boy who was never invited, never summoned, and never spoke. As the journal is read, its descriptions begin to mirror one photograph lying among the others with unsettling precision.

The participant is asked for the number they remembered.

The performer slowly counts down through the photographs.

The final card is turned over.

A name is revealed.

William.

At the exact position corresponding to the number the participant was merely thinking of.
