‘The Chancer’ is Liam Montier’s complete overhaul of the classic ‘Premonition’ by Eddie Joseph, and expands the methodology to make the routine easier to do, more deceptive, and more practical to boot.
The effect is that two decks of cards are introduced at the start - one left aside, and the other opened and tabled.
Now, two spectators think of two different cards - and are told NOT TO REVEAL THEM YET! The cards they choose are unknown by the magician, and not said out loud.
Counting through the deck on the table, the spectators are asked to call stop when they see their cards.
Completely fairly, you deal through the pack - neither spectator sees their card. You count as you go, and end up with just fifty cards (and there really are just 50 - no sticky stuff, no specially printed gaffs or trick cards!). The two cards the spectators were merely thinking of, and never named, are not in the pack!
You explain that you bought two decks - one was missing two cards, and the other pack had two extras… only now do you have the spectators reveal the cards they were thinking of.
You spread through, and remove the two mentally selected cards, placing them on the table.
On turning them over, they have the same backs as from the first deck - proof that they are the actual, thought of cards missing from the first pack!
