You explain that they are going to EITHER lie or tell the truth 3 times, and they can choose what to do each time. You will ask them if their card is in the few cards you show them, and they can choose to either lie, or tell the truth every time you ask. You explain that they have only to remember what they have chosen to do each time, but that the choice is theirs.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"su-spoiler-title\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"su-spoiler-content su-clearfix\"\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou strip out four cards from the eight card pile and show them to the audience member (again, you don't see the faces). You then put the cards to the bottom of the pile, and ask if they saw their card. They say no. You do this again, square up the pile and ask if they saw their card. They say yes. One last time, you strip out four cards, show them, replace them, then ask if they saw the card. They say yes. You nod, and explain that you are trying to memorise their behaviour for lying and telling the truth, so you need to know which ones they lied on. They tell you the first and the third. You nod, cut the eight card packet into the deck, still face down without you having apparently seen any of the faces. You pocket the deck, then walk through a simple demonstration of your lie detection abilities, honing in on the colour, suit and value of the card until finally you tell them the card they were thinking of.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThat's one effect - it's great fun to perform, and it is extremely effective. One by one, at random, you call their names - they are to name the card they picked, then show the card you gave them. Every single one is correct. You tell them to imagine they are allergic to one item in their kitchen, but not to tell you what it is. You have them fetch eight items from the cupboards, one of which is their secret allergen. You line them up on the table and pull out groups of four, explaining three different meals made with those ingredients. For each meal containing their allergen they should cough as though reacting to it. At the end of the three imagined meals, you explain that even though the allergy is imaginary, they have taught their body to react, which it will now do involuntarily. One by one you hand them the items until you stop and declare THIS one is the one they were thinking of. Despite the enormity of the odds, you have predicted this selection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe (Un)Usual Suspects. “Card calling” routines are numerous and while the method described here is as old as the hills, this effect, where you name the cards selected by five volunteers, is as fresh as tomorrows’ news.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOccupation Hazard. A bit of black comedy in this routine that uses not playing cards, but cards on which you’ve written names of occupations that nobody ever wants. The routine is framed as an employment aptitude test and your assistant somehow manages to select the job that doesn’t involve anything grisly!!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Wry Detector. This is my take on the classic “lie detector” routine. A card is selected and your volunteer can choose to lie or tell the truth about the three attributes of the selection. You have a little gadget though that not only helps you correctly identify the “real” selection but causes the “lied-about” card to turn over in an unused deck!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eUnmarked Cards. One of my favourite openers. A spectator draws any card thought of on a blank card. Suddenly the blank deck from which the card was originally taken becomes fully printed and the spectator’s hand-drawn card lays between card with the same suit and same value.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy Favorite Things. You show a selection of coins and your helper examines then selects any one. Similarly, she selects a playing card and signs it face. Why is the coin your “favorite”?
